Help please with the following question, thanks in advance

He went to the bakers and bought some cakes and started to walk home. On the way he met seven other people and each time he met one he gave them half of his cakes but they insisted on giving him one back each time. When he got home he made a pot of tea and put the remaining two cakes on a plate.

How many cakes did he buy at the bakers ?

Thanks Donny, that was my thought but it was just that the question said
'the remaining two cakes'
Think that was thrown in just to confuse people like me!!!
I actually got pencil and paper before the light bulb moment.
I hope he always gave away the one that had been previously donated......for hygiene purposes. :-)
One cake would be extremely grubby being passed from hand to hand.
Crossed, Tilly.
....even though he still ended up with a cake that someone else had handled.
you'd think they'd make their mind up whether they wanted a cake or not wouldn't you?
The 'seven' is a blind. It could be any number and the answer will always be two.
I hope they weren't egg custards. Egg custards can be a bit dodgy!
When Ann was ill I made her a large egg custard each day. I consider myself an expert on them though I can't abide the taste,
Homemade ones are divine, Donny. Did you sprinkle a bit of nutmeg on the top?

Of course. Ann would lay on a sunbed on the back-lawn and it was one of the few things she could keep down.
An egg custard isn't an egg custard without the nutmeg. My mother's were divine.
I take it that Ann is better now, Donny.

Would either of you care to share your recipe?
Yes Ann is better, this was years ago and i had the help of the kids, four of them ranging from 10yrs down to 6yrs. My eldest daughter ran it like a military operation. They were magnificent. Recipe to follow.
Good.

Thank you.
Egg custards------
4 oz shortcrust pastry - line an 18cm flan ring and bake blind

2 eggs
1/2 pint milk
2 tablespns sugar
grated nutmeg

Whisk eggs, bring milk and sugar to boil, pour onto eggs and cool
Pour into pastry case, sprinkle with nutmeg
Bake at 180 deg C Mk 4 for about 20 mins until set
Thanks for that Donny. That seems simple enough. (How do you stop the eggs from curdling when you pour the milk and sugar on? Does the milk and sugar solution have to be cold?)
Have the eggs already beaten, bring milk and sugar nearly to boil(forgot to say nearly before) add slowly to eggs stirring continuously.
