Given the name of this place you'd think we'd come to watch a game of premier league football. There to honour an international contest. England 1 Norway 0. I think this is York?? It also says the river crossing has almost certainly moved. Also talks about a house 9 miles north in AONB, think the house is Castle Howard as as they talk about 1980's TV series and 2000's film. Is the village as it was know historically YorK???

Might be Stamford Bridge. Have a look at the website: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stamford_Bridge,_East_Riding_of_Yorkshire

The village shares it’s name with a football ground
Castle Howard's website says that the stately home is 15 miles north-east of York, which doesn't really fit your text.
I'm with Toorak - 2 words in name.

Yes, can't simply be York. Nowhere near the Premier League. Think of a historical battle with a Norwegian army
