I can only presume that we'd need to see the quiz sheet to see how they work - so far I'm afraid it's as clear as mud.
I blame that Doreen
I have heard rumours.
Yes, Doreen's one and only contribution so far and look at what she's unleashed!
well I cant see a case for anagram of I TRAVEL ERA apart from the ERA bit being an annagram of ARE. Where does 'road' or 'loses speed' fit in?
I wondered about brakes or jam or slows for traffic loses speed
pelicans? You slow down/stop at a pelican crossing?
Or Puffins?
I don't think Doreen's clue had anything to do with Joan's.

Controversial, I know.
Red herring?

I know that's not a bird.
It's probably pheasant. It's always a pheasant.
Blackbirds are the most common roadkill but I can't see a cryptic link in the clue
Any more thoughts on this one??

Thanks, but have had to give up.
is clue above EXACTLY as printed on there quiz sheet???
Question Author
Afraid so. It's an odd one.
Are the other answers mostly singular or plural?
Can you give us an example of another clue and what the answer was to give us idea of how these work.
Question Author
All singular; another anomaly.
Doesnt help much but my guess is it ends in BIRD (like blackbird)? The clue suggests to me it could end in Rd (road) any way
I've tried everything but can get nowhere, sorry!
