With a birthday coming up shortly I am wondering whether to put the Almanac, as part of the prize offered for the Telgraph GK Crossword, on my wish list. Has anyone out there got one, can they recommend it, and more importantly, will it make me brilliant?

Many thanks for any suggestions.

It's a very good reference book Bluebell. I would love an up to date copy. We have half a dozen copies from various years that we have picked up at boot sales ,charity shops etc.Even though some of the info in them is out of date now they still provide me with lots of answers to quizzes and crosswords.
From the same publisher is `Whitakers World of Facts`. It was publisehed late in 2005 and is full of information. It is 19.99.

Thank you so much Shaneystar. The one that has been suggested is on Amazon priced at 28, although I'm sure I saw one priced once at 260. I don't want to be that brilliant or my daughter that skint! Incidentally, your suggestion last autumn for the fruit salad (well doctored!) which I needed to impress my husband's work colleagues was much appreciated!

Having just bought my first ever ticket for the Euro Lottery tonight, if I win, I shall buy you the expensive Almanac! Thank you again for your help.

Many thanks boaw, and even better, just checked Amazon, and it's 6 cheaper. I shall add that book on the list now as well.
Glad they all enjoyed the fruit salad Bluebell ! One book which I find invaluable is The A to Z of almost Everything by Trevor Montague.I think he was a Mastermind winner at one time. This is also updated every year and is available from Telegraph books.Another one to add to your list! !

Hi Val. Wow! That really is an incredible price. I shall certainly be adding this book to the list as well. I'm also asking for a Tom Paxton CD. Now that really ages me!!
