Sorry, kayakamina - the second letter of the first answer is the first of the second. I think 'ives' is right (thanks), which makes the other one *i*a*o*a - presumably an anagram of 'aimoscar'. Anyway, I can't see that 'Oklahoma' is a composer - but I'm still stuck!

I was distracted by the name Hammerstein who wrote Oklahoma and the letters fitted in .

Thanks very much, kayakamina, and not for the first time! I tried all the combinations of letters, but couldn't track this guy down.
Cheaton - the crossword is in The Week magazine - last week's issue. All the across clues were the names of composers, hidden in anagrams - the clue for the one I wanted was "Acclaim Oscar Hammerstein".
