Don't know what you think, but I wonder if KM is reading this website, and as a result has upped the ante because today's (well to me) seemed harder than some of the recent GKs?

Interesting! It's good to see that KM does espy our efforts. It makes it more of a challenge. I bought the paper at the nearest shop (about a mile away) at 7.15, rolled up my sleeves, sharpened my pencil (eraser close to hand!), laid out the reference books and ploughed my way through and landed up staring at 32 across, my last one to finish, and continued to stare. Made another cup of tea and with that the answer came! The point of this long-winded posting is the one I struggled over was the one that should not have been a problem. I'm an architect! Stuff the reference books, Strix, use your brain!
For 32a by entering "timber beam small cross section" into the one look reverse dictionary, it was the first option given!

32ac I've just gone through the definition in the Complete Oxford Dictionary and its true meaning is a "size or measurement" based round scant in the sense of being economic in the dimensions of materials used whether timber, stone or glass. To boats Scantlings are the measurements/dimensions of the boat.
