Okay...I don't normally get involved in 'personal' affrays on this site with people, as often I see both points of view to a certain extent and do believe people are entitled to an opinion.

I have been busy today and could only get on line tonight...trying to catch up on some of the crosswords, I came on here to see if some of my 'trickier' clues were already answered..and I did find most of them..so thanks everyone.

I could not help but notice though some animosity and downright rudeness by some people...alright you can tell me to keep out of it, but why don't we all adhere to a few basic guidelines to keep this site as friendly and helpful as it's always been. I have met some great mentors and friends on this site.

If you think a question is inappropriate or asked 'too soon'...don't answer it!

If you think an answer is easy and obvious..remember it is ..ONLY if you know it!!!

Make allowances for people finding this site who may not have the level of intelligence as some others on here. (my daughter is Special Needs..and may have come across a site like this for an answer to something we would deem 'easy!') Do not presume.

If you do visit this site and can manage to read the basic guidelines to get the best help available, then try to follow them. i.e....give crossword, clue, and amount of letters. Any additional information for quizzes will help you get a quicker answer. Then try and remember to say 'thank you!'...or acknowledge the answer.

But please...let's get this site back on track..and try to keep it a nice place to visit. There are plenty of other places to go for a slanging match!

Sorry if I have overstepped the mark...but I had to have my say! Hope I haven't upset anybody.

Pauline xx

Here we go again. . . . . . . . . .
I seldom, if ever, use this site any more.
I did reply to Figi Spotty Dog and Waugh2 who were definitely harassing Teddy Bears. I told them they were getting sillier by the moment. What I actually said was that the whole da*ned thread was getting sillier by the moment. My answer was banned, and they are left to continue with their silly nonsense.
The following is taken from the AB site and hardly qualifies as giving an opinion, but does qualify as an insult in referring to folks using the site as cheats:

From Figi. Thurs 18/1/07 14:27
Nobody has yet answered the question which several people have posed about giving away as many answers as possible weeks before the deadline - namely, why bother sending for the quiz if you aren't prepared to exercise your own brain on it? And if you haven't got the will or the skill, then for goodness sake get the e-mail addresses of the other cheats and swap answers in private.

Methinks that I shall not be using the site at all any more or at least not until I can use it feeling that there is a sense of friendship and civility prevailing. It is not a debate we are involved in re a person's right to their opinion but a nasty argument that is ongoing re whose opinion can be forced down whose throat, started and continued by the three above-mentioned.
If Pauline, or anyone else, dares to suggest a few basic guidelines to help keep the site friendly and helpful she/they are also attacked and told that calling someone an utter dimwit is an opinion. I rather think it comes under the heading of insult and as such even if the writer considers it an opinion is one best kept to oneself.

I consider the folks who started harassing Teddybears (and anyone else) as being opinionated which is really quite different from being qualified to give an opinion.
As I said in the post that was disallowed by AB management while the other three raved on, This site is called Answer Bank. If you dont like how people are using it then go elsewhere.

I wasn't going to bother with this anymore, as when I read that calling somebody 'an utter dimwit' is an opinion...I just wonder why it's worth bothering.

The post Ont-ice is referring to is just one of many that seem to be on this site lately. I posted last night as a general observation after coming on yesterday and reading more insults.

I find it sad that people defend bad manners and insults under the guise of having an opinion.
I'd like to add a few words to this thread. I am aware of the unfriendly posts you are referring to, Pauline, I reported them as abusive the minute I saw them. There's no need for this horrible attitude.

I fully agree that insults cannot possibly be considered as opinions ... there are civilised ways and means of expressing ones views, and yes, of course different people have vastly different concepts of what is right or wrong, and that is precisely as it should be in society .. but the manner in which some views are expressed on occasions indicates a complete lack of decency, and as such are simply not acceptable.
As Im away on holiday Ive only just become aware of this thread, and normally stay out of these things, but I, too, have become aware of the nasty undercurrent that seems to have sprung up lately. I wholeheartedly agree that people should be allowed to express their opinions so here are mine.

1)when I first joined answerbank virtually everybody was really polite and helpful. In my opinion this is no longer so and it would be nice to get back to that.
2) People who answer regularly should each formulate their own policy regarding how and when to answer questions
3) If that policy is different from someone elses they should accept the other persons right to answer or not, as the case may be
4) This policy should be applied consistently; that is it should apply to every sort of quiz and puzzle, with no distinctions made between cryptic, general knowledge, charity or more intellectualpuzzles.

My own policy is as follows:
1) As this is quizzes and puzzles I like to think people would try to puzzle things out on their own first, so I do not answer questions posed early in the morning re. a crossword published that day, or in the first weeks of a charity quiz etc. with a long time to go before final answers.
2) I dont respond to blanketquestions that ask for answers to most of the questions in the puzzle.
3) I dont make a fuss when other people dont follow these rulesas they are my rules and not Site Rules
4) I try to notice if people ask for a cluerather than the answer, though I occasionally fail in this
5) For tricky clues I try to provide an explanation to help the person asking the question
6) I try to avoid rising to the baitwhere disputes do break out, but if I do respond I try to do so politely.

One final obsevation: Paulines comment regarding people of differing abilities is a very valid one. I love the generosity most people show
on this site. Please do not allow the bullies to spoil that. Please dont let them win by giving up on the site either.
Great to hear all the support for your comments Pauline. All the regular contributors are obviously in agreement with you. We'll ignore the few and enjoy the site with the majority who are great fun.
good for you Pauline, were all behind you 100%
best regards Dee

I totally agree that the rudeness of some on here is quite uncalled for. However, I do think that many people are still missing the point. Yes, this is a Q&A site - no complaints there.

Why do so many people want to enter a "charity" quiz but seem to feel embarrassed to leave gaps if they don't know the answers? They have to ask for the answers on here-lots of them (please note the majority ask for the answers, not clues). If you don't know an answer to a charity question, where is the harm in leaving it blank?

Then, we see many posts proclaiming "I've won" this or that quiz. Well done, or should I say well done to everyone who helped to answer that person's questions. Do people not have any pride/ethics/scruples any more? How can people claim to have won a quiz when they clearly have not answered all the questions themselves? And don't forget, that situation will just escalate - I can remember my parents drumming into me that the only way to learn is to find out for yourself, not ask someone else to do the work for you.

Some people strive long and hard to find answers for themselves, then find them freely given away on here - it really is very frustrating when you've put in a lot of effort to get an answer for yourself and then see it just given away to all and sundry on here (charity quiz or otherwise).

To everyone applauding paulineward for her comments, please remember that there is another side of the coin, when it can be reasonably put without rudeness, it should not be dismissed as causing trouble-everyone is entitled to their opinion, especially when it's put politely.

And it comes to something when phrases like "ignorant louts", "heads up their backsides", "trolls", and "idiots" are used by the so-called friendly people on here - aquagility, I think you said people shouldn't use "unsuitable or threatening language", well the "ignorant louts" came from your fair hand - I
sorry, that should end - I think pot, kettle and black springs to mind?
