Sorry, should have written the questions in full:

21 - Article found in The Channel is a gold coin. (5)

85 - Wages spiral? (5)
21 Ducat
21 - Ducat
A (article found in duct (channel
85 - could be SWAGE
Question Author
Thanks Sonyme - but what does swage have to do with money?
85 Used to fix two pieces of wood together
Swage is anagram of money and is the spiral waste that is formed when drilling metal
Swage is anagram of money and is the spiral waste that is formed when drilling metal

THAT SHOULD BE ANAGRAM OF WAGES
this suggested answer has been given 2 or 3 times before on this site BUT ....... such deafening silence from so many abers that have finished their puzzle ..... having got the answers that THEY needed .... often just watching others asking, without asking themselves (for fear of being set upon) .....

SWAGE:
noun: tool used to shape cold metal: a tool or die used to shape cold metal by hammering or applying pressure

verb: to bend or shape metal with a swage

engineering: (swage block) holed metal block for shaping metal: a metal block with holes or grooves used to shape cold metal

just cannot see the link to MONEY, but I may be wrong?

.......

the answer given before -

there is a 'old slang' word meaning money as in 'salary and wages' ..... the word has many meanings .... e.g.

another term for a propeller;

a cylinder with a helical groove on its outside (thread);

when added to the word thumb, it is an instrument of torture !

a snooker / billiard shot, when followed by the word 'back'

etc etc
sometimes it is hard to remember the answers - especially when they are obscure like swage.
Have you got the big Chambers chris15? That helps when you find the answer but don't know why.
The other useful boook is the crossword companion.
good luck
After all those clues I would think Chris 15 should have the answer!
Have you not heard of the phrase "He's on a good s????" meaning he's earning a very good wage?
This word relates to MONEY
Question Author
No Masterchef I hadn't heard of that phrase, but as Goofy suggests I shall consult the original Chambers.

After all these postings I shall close the subject and post off my entry.

Good luck everyone!
