Have completed about half of the straight clues but the letters I have appearing in the unclued entries seem to be an odd jumble. Am I missing something here?

As it says in the preamble

"Wordplay in a number of clues includes an additional letter........"

Once you have all of these letters it will become obvious what you have to do to make sense of the grid.
