three at a guess
weigh four against four.
Then two against two of the heavier four.
Then one against one of the heavier two

unless your scales will only wiegh one against one????
Two weighings, starting with three against three.
If even, its one of the other two - check weigh.
If not, you have the heavier in one of the three.
Take two of these three and weigh - if level, its the third.
If not, take out the heavier.
