Having sorted out the grid thanks to a previous answer, I'm now stuck on 18A (in the clues) or 17A (on the grid) - Reddish-brown colour. I have _A_E_ Please can anybody help?

Hazel. This crossword is likely to be called void.

Thanks for that - thought it looked like "Hazel" but wouldn't have said Hazel was "reddish-brown"! It's more like greenish-brown. Don't think people with Hazel eyes would be very pleased to think their eyes are "reddish-brown"! Re crossword being declared void - yes, thought it might, but have read several questions & answers about it and they all say they haven't heard anything officially. Don't really know how to find out - apart from waiting till next Saturday! Thanks for the warning though.
Know what you mean but the Oxford dictionaries have one definition of hazel as 'a reddish-brown or greenish-brown colour, especially of a person's eyes'.

It is rather poor of the Telegraph not to say something about the error in the paper today (at least, I cannot see anything).
it says volumes about the arrogance of the management
