Finished this and guessed some answers- but can't understand how the compilier arrived at some of the solutions- very annoying- any suggestions?
42d "characteristic of the alphabet reported from Brideshead"- we have "flyte" but don't see why.
G "Look up at the second apololyptic house"- "gander "being to look but why the second part?
A " Small boy or girl failed exam at beginning of term"- "avocet," but why?

Haven't got the puzzle to hand any more but think you've mangled the clue a bit - look up was an instruction to reverse the words and (it must have been apopleptic horse?) gives you red nag - backwards is gander
small boy or girl is viv (short for vivian or vivienne) 'failed i.e. not present in viva voce - a type of exam plus start of term = t
