Chamois said, "I made no comment on the sources Kate uses..." actually you did Chamois, and this seems to be what the argument is ultimately about. I quote, "Kate and her late dad have always used Credo Reference, formerly Xrefer Plus to set the crosswords."

But all that aside, I fail to see why it is necessary to be so unpleasant and unmannerly just to make a point. We are told that the language is constantly changing and evolving, perhaps even the noun 'antbear' will evolve into something totally unrecognisable by present day lexicographers and compilers of crossword puzzles. Personally, I can't see that it matters one jot.

DaisyMae, I used the sentence you quoted in the context of not criticising Kate over her over her choice of dictionary.

As far as unpleasant and unmannerly are concerned, I suggest you look again at Catrons response to Aquagility. Clearly, Catron has had reason to openly argue with Aquagility over some issue in the past and continues to bear a grudge over the matter. There is no other explanation for his or her behaviour.

As Aquagility said, we move on on AB. Only the puerile react to such an extent that they immediately respond with a knee-jerk reaction upon seeing a post from a previous antagonist. Why the hostility? One cannot go through life responding with hostility because you've argued with that person in the past.

So essence I'd say to you DaisyMae that Catron started it not me. I was defending a man of great stature and intellect here on AB who did not deserve the remarks that been thrown at him.

You may consider my remarks to Catron unwarranted but I speak to people as they talk to me and others. It was nothing to do with masking a point. You should also note that Catron has not even grudgingly accepted that I was correct in stating that "ant bear" WAS in the OED after all. It never fails to surprise me that when people are found to be mitaken here on AB, they tend to avoid admitting that they were wrong.

As for your final and penultimate sentence, I couldn't agree more.
I wonder who the one bearing a grudge is? Hoist, would you say? Nasty vicious little man.

Oh and I have not read any of chamois 'unpleasant and unmannerly' posts from the previous page - the very fact that they have been called that by someone with no axe to grind tells me all I need to know.

OMG how big of you not to have read any of my posts Catron!
Somehow I don't think so - people like you cannot avoid curiosity even when it's directed towards yourself. You're superior and apparently unbiased attitude cuts no ice on here - other people see you for what you are.

Do you really go through life not accepting criticism from others? How superior of you. Do us all a favour and get a life!
Concise Oxford Dictionary has ANTBEAR, which is at least as correct as ANT BEAR
