giant fennel bacchanalian staff - i find this could be
THYRSUS or THYRSOS - which is most acceptable ?
The mind boggles with the pine cone on top !

My Chambers Dictionary only has THYRSUS - so I'm going with that.

I'm going with THYRSUS too although when I find that two answers are possible I always attach one of those yellow sticky notes to the puzzle on which I write "Incidentally, the answer to [clue number] could also be [alternative answer]" , just to be clever! Whether they take any notice I've no idea!
