We all have different opinions on how this site is used but the end comment on this thread gives the setters viewpoint

To slightly redress the balance smouse, this is not he viewpoint of EVERY setter. I refer you to an earlier thread with my viewpoint on the subject.

I didnt say it was but as they had posted on a very old thread realised not many people would see it

I do know of 3 people now who are no longer going to put the time in to set quizzes a big loss to me if this continues

I dont do whatquiz so as I say was just bringing it to peoples attention
If quiz-setters can use all the resources on the internet to obtain information for questions, why can folk not use those same resources to get the answers? I see one setter has said it is unfair on those who do not use forums, is that not their fault thent? What about folk who have no internet and can't access a library, are they not at a disadvantage too?

It seems folk are more than happy to see quizzes advertised on this site and yet others mump about it because answers are given on it.

TCL-MUMPING -
It's interesting that you seem to regard the relationship between quiz setters and quiz entrants as "them and us". We regard quiz setting as a source of fun, interest and knowledge, and hope that the entrants see it like that too.
For the record, we get our original ideas for questions from books/ magazine articles/ out of our head, and then use the internet to check how easy the answer is to find, and then modify the clues accordingly.
I wasn't "mumping" (whatever that is!), I was merely pointing out the problems that quiz setters face, namely -
1. Questions too easy - everyone "wins".
2. Questions too difficult - no-one enters.
3. There is so much information on the web that there are usually errors/contradicting answers on different sites, which would cause controversy.
4. If the answer cannot be found anywhere on the internet we usually don't use the question because we know that most people don't use books.
Answer sharing on forums just adds another problem.
We regularly spend an hour on just one question getting it to just the right level of difficulty, and then someone gets the answer in a few minutes from a forum.
If the list of problems gets to the point where quiz setters give up, any would-be entrants would lose out also and that is the point I was trying to make.
Beverley Darnell
Hey Beverley,
1. We always use our books first for Crosswords and Quizzes. We've got our own libray which has overflowed into the sitting room and 3 bedrooms.
2. We gave up Quizmail because entrants were asking for answers even before the quiz was delivered because the Quiz Setters had put it online.
3. It doesn't really make much difference at what stage ABers ask for the answers because it's still cheating. The same old names crop up every month for Quizmail/GFQ/GFB. They are always 'struggling ' or 'my brain's gone dead' or 'down to the last one, two 15' even with 3 weeks to go.
4. Quizmail started off as a 'team quiz' and my family, friends and the Villagers were my team. We didn't set up a website for other entrants to crib our answers like the chap called Don.I sometimes met other entrants at the various public libraries and some would cover their answers so I couldn't see and cheat! That's before AB ruined it. None of them enter now. either.
5. Your Quiz sounds right up my street but I'm only entering one these days which is because of AB spoiling the fun. Soon I fear it will be none.
Hi smouse!

Hi
Which one do you still do as a matter of interest

Got a cold so not up to deep and meaningful discussion at the moment
Hi smouse, Poor you, you need some nice sea air.
GFQ is my only remaining quiz.
I belong to 2 clubs for compers that each have about 100 members. They sometimes run quizzes with ambiguous answers/questions because the Setters aren't experts. I'd hate to see people asking on AB.
I subscribe to Lovatt's crosswords The Works and there are now people asking on a daily basis, same old names crop up every month asking for huge lists. I shall stop taking it in December when it runs out.
I finished EST/CAM with no problems and posted it.
Hubby still does MOS, YOU Sunday Express GK and RT. He doesn't need to know he's up against AB.
We never need to ask anything really. We're dogged people who would never use age as an excuse!
You obviousy still do loads but I have a huge garden and get my brisk 3 miles in along the coast and have lots of books waiting to be read since I stopped work to bring the children up. HMM 1978!!
Feel better soon.

It seems to me that for some folk, certain quizzes are or have been considered to be sacrosanct and outwith the scope of this site. These same folk have no problems it seems when others ask for crossword answers where the prize can be a tidy wee sum, what is the difference?

By the way if you do not know what mumping means, you have the internet at yir fingertips.

I dont have a problem with people asking just asking too soon and too many

and mump appears to mean mumble or speak unclearly or beg for something

now can you teach some of the others asking easy question how to use google too
That may be a definition of mump but that is not the meaning in this particular context, have another go.
