MM Links August 2009 [Week 2]

Good morning all and welcome to my second week as Pope Adrian the Meagre, which is a huge promotion for me from being a humble altar server.
To continue on from last week when I told you about my early childhood, after my Grandfather passed away we moved to a small town nearby on the edge of the Green Belt. We lived opposite a golf course, which fostered my interest in the game, although at that time membership would have been too expensive. Our plan was to jump over the fence and hit a ball up and down some of the fairways with an old club we'd found.
The area was surrounded by woodlands, where we would play (unsupervised) after school and during the summer holidays. There was a farm nearby, where (when I was twelve) I got a job during the school holidays picking potatoes and bringing in hay bales. It was hard physical work (as that first summer was very hot and sunny) and all for the princely sum of half a crown per hour (12 pence in modern money). I only got that amount by lying about my age - saying that I was fourteen, otherwise it would have been two shillings per hour! In those days, farming methods involved a lot of manual labour, whereas today most of these tasks have been mechanised.

Sadly nowadays, these have all but disappeared (except in small pockets) and seem to have been replaced mainly by fields of oilseed rape, cereals and pasture.
As you may know, during the medieval and early modern period, Kent played a major role in several of England's most notable rebellions, including the Peasants' Revolt of 1381, led by Wat Tyler, Jack Cade's Kent rebellion of 1450, and Thomas Wyatt's Rebellion of 1554 against Queen Mary I. Most of these rebellions were against unfair levels of taxation and corruption things dont seemed to have changed much today, though the masses have yet to march on London.

The late fifties saw another revolution, but this time within the music scene, with the arrival of British Rock in the guise of Cliff Richard and the Shadows, Tommy Steele, Billy Fury and Adam Faith. I would try to listen to Radio Luxemburg in the evening on my Dansette radiogram, with the signal constantly fading in and out. We would spend Saturdays at the local coffee bar, playing the latest releases on the juke box and buying the cover versions at Woolworths under the Winfield label, which were cheaper than the originals and sounded almost as good.
Anyway, now down to business.
Once again, I shall follow the rules relating to the word length as introduced by crofter. Each of my chosen link words contains at least four letters and at most eight. Stray outside this range and you will be wasting one or more of your attempts! Each of my selected words may go in front of or after my challenge word. The competition will officially close at 7.00pm on Sunday evening when my selected words will be declared, and points awarded in the usual manner. My second set of words to be linked should appear below at 9.00am.
