MM Links Solutions March 2010 [Week 2]
14 Answers
What did 'Strix the Sylviculturalist' come up with for you this weekend? What went with three trees and a lily?
I can now reveal that the Owl's favoured links were:
HOLM oak
ash TRAY
BUCK thorn
TIGER lily
Some were even hinted at in the long introduction on Saturday morning:
“there’s no place like…..” (groan!)
"A deer, with his does"
... and all those references to A A Milne "winnie the pooh and tigger too"
So who discovered what? Read on . . .

. . . but the genuine points went as follows:-
Not a great day for the Shrubbery lurkers who only matched two links.
First to fall at 9:02 was ASH TRAY, the link of choice for 'jan1956' at 9:06. Within 2 minutes, this was also the chosen repository of x-ray, beejay1124, seekeerz, Dustybun, cliffyg and Grenmus (Does that reflect those still trying to kick the habit?). 2 points each.
Next was TIGER LILY ('Tigger') at 9:02 when 'ulysses100' (who recognised the Kipling poem quote) earned 2 points, quickly followed by 'lysander' (also for 2 points).
At 9:07, 'tearinghair' was bemoaning the fact that her computer had crashed at the critical moment depriving her of the chance of bonus points - not so. 2 points duly awarded for picking up HOLM OAK. Throughout the game there was not a single other taker for this link.
The final link of BUCK THORN lasted almost an hour until 'wickedtongue' was alone in going for this combination (does nobody else live by the seaside?).
Not only that, but 'wickedtongue' picked up a single for TIGER LILY to take the top score (3) for the week and the designation of:
*** HOTSHOT OF THE WEEK ***
Congratulations 'wickedtongue'
(I think you have had previous success with guessing 'Strix' links - are you a soulmate?)
Mention should also be made of the only other player to achieve a double-hit (for 2 points), that was 'teacher1'.
For the scores, read on . . .

Thanks gen2 for your deliberations, and to Strix for the setting, whose heart probably sank when I completed the quotation, not suspecting at all that they would be three of the link words ! And not that that helped me in the slightest. Congratulations too go to the others out in the lead ; let's see what Strix's mind will conjure up for next weekend.
Ulysses, no, I had no doubt someone would pick up on the poem and set them thinking/linking in advance of the link words being actually published but, not, that they WOULD be the link words!
Congrats to the wickedtongue who, so long ago, picked up on Concrete Poetry (yes, seekeerz, it was he) and on Mare Nostrum.
As ever thank you to Gen2 who has taken over running the MM links this month at such short notice and has many other things on his plate at the same time. We all appreciate your contribution to this bonkers site!!

I might have a lie in next week too Pauline! Maybe we could have the first posting say 5-10 minutes earlier when the pre-ambles are so long? Not a good week for those of us who don't know so much about trees and plants. Thank goodness for the politically incorrect ash tray!!
Thanks to all the workers :0)
