Used as an idiom, 'diamond cut diamond' means that someone has met his/her match...ie someone else just as tough as they are. This is because the only thing that is capable of cutting a diamond - noted for its extreme hardness - is another diamond or else some form of diamond-dust. So, you might hear or read: "As far as our relationship was concerned, it was diamond cut diamond."
