George Eliot, yes,  but it's Silas Marner
Question Author
Thanks greenfingers and Marsh. I had looked up George Eliot when I read the reply from greenfingers and had just discovered that it was Silas Marner when I got an e-mail alerting me to the reply from Marsh, so thanks for the confirmation.
Could Number 2 be King Midas?
Question Author
Thanks Shire, but it was Silas Marner.
