1 is really difficult as there are so many types of scales.... but there are 12 semitones in an octave in Western types of music, do you think that it what the question means?

If you include both the first and last notes of an octave then there are 13.

because the word octave suggests EIGHT and to count 8, you have to count the base note (doh) twice - 8 notes, 7 intervals.
No, the word octave suggests that it's based on base 8, not that it contains 8 elements.

By that argument, a decade contains 11 years...
