MM Links August 2010 [Week 1]
66 Answers
Good Morning to all you MM Linkers! I believe that crofter has dubbed me “The Lady Ursula”, but you will know me better as “owllady”. I am very pleased and honoured to have the opportunity to attempt to do my bit to contribute to the MM Links Games throughout the month of August. In fact, my name means “little she bear” so I ought to be an arctophile. However, my passion is for the bird which has been the mascot of Athens since ancient times and was revered for its superb intelligence, wisdom and grace: the owl (from the family “Strigiformes”). I was brought up in a little village in Lincolnshire, where my fascination with all the creatures of the night originated. My sister and I used to lie in bed and listen to these eerie sounds emanating from the woods opposite the house. Our parents explained us that the noises came from foxes and owls. The sly, cunning and blood-thirsty foxes did nothing for my imagination, as we used to see the local hunt quite regularly, although I don’t recall any being caught. The owls on the other hand fascinated me, because they were hardly ever seen and (when I did manage to see one) it was always so graceful, elegant and silent

This gave me the opportunity to see the largest of the owls; the eagle owl. Although not native to Britain, it is a beautiful and amazing creature – and quite a contrast to our native little owl. I have spent my happy hours at the sanctuary and often watched nesting boxes being placed for the owls in the nearby farmers’ outbuildings and in the local woods. Over the years, I have collected a great number of owl ornaments and pictures. So much so, that when I joined AnswerBank, my sister suggested that my username just had to be “owllady” and a natural avatar for me was a barn owl in nightly flight. To me, this avatar captures the essence of owls -- their silence and ghostly aura.
In preparation for today’s Word Game, for the every-day running of MM, I shall follow the usual rule on word length as introduced by crofter. Each of my chosen link words contains at least four letters and at most eight. Stray outside this range and you will be wasting one of your attempts! Each of my selected words may go in front of or after my challenge word. The competition will officially close at 7.00pm on Sunday evening when crofter will declare my selected words, then apply the same rules for awarding points that have been applied during all MM Link Games in the past. My first set of four words to have their links predicted should appear below at 9.00am.
