Good Morning, MM Linkers, and welcome to the second week of my reign as Lady Alex the Leisurely.
Last week, you will recall that I revealed that right from the early years of my marriage, I enjoyed cooking. Perhaps as a direct result, perhaps not [I leave it for you to judge] Lord Alex and I decided that we really should get a bit more physical exercise. No sooner thought of -- than forgotten. However, the subject was re-visited a year or so later, when we could no longer ignore the effects of seventies food on our ever-expanding waistlines.
There being no such things as gyms then [and no “t’internet” to surf] a few trips to the local library led us to the sport of Orienteering or 'Cunning Running' as its aficionados would have it. With some trepidation, we joined our local club and embarked on our new hobby.

For those of you who have never heard of this sport, it involves copying a route from a master topographic map to your own map, then running round your particular route stopping at 'Controls'. These 'Controls' are hidden in the bushes, behind rocks, in ditches, etc and are marked with a red and white flag. At each Control Point, you stamp your card to prove you've been there. So, it entails a mixture of running, map-reading and treasure hunting. All ages and levels of fitness are catered for, from people with children in tow to 'seniors' with courses laid out appropriate to their ability.
Obviously, a compass is essential and it is also insisted upon that you carry a whistle, in case you get totally lost. So … compasses and whistles were duly purchased and we were off. Sunday mornings were spent getting hopelessly lost in woodlands all over the south east of England and afternoons lolling exhausted on the settee to groans of 'Never again!'
As anyone who has ever spent any time with me will know, this was perhaps not the sport that would first have come to mind – considering my foibles. My chief foible is that I have absolutely no sense of direction. Ever! Even when I have traveled the same route many times, I am still very likely to take a wrong turning. Whenever I come to a T junction, I know that I will always take the wrong road. Always! Even if my instinct is to go right, I sometimes try to double guess my instinct and deliberately go left -- but it still turns out to be the wrong decision! I have never met anyone who has even come close to being as badly disorientated as I am.

This degree of disorientation must be genetic, since some of my close family members have demonstrated the same malfunction. I can only assume that members of my family are not destined to roam far from home -- or alternatively, once they've gone, they seldom return. Thank goodness for SatNav! Needless to say that in spite of spending many happy weekends (dis-)Orienteering, we haven’t even got close to winning a prize.

Each of my pre-selected link words contains at least four letters and at most eight letters. Stray outside this range and you will be wasting one of your attempts! The competition will officially close on Sunday Evening at 7.00pm, when crofter will declare my pre-selected words and then apply the same rules for awarding points that have been applied during all MM Link Games in the past.
