i got builders in changin my heating over and i was watching them soldering the pipes earlier.  the flames went green, it was so cool.  but why did they go that colour?

As EDDIES51 said, metals give different colours to flames, and this is why they are used to make different colour fireworks.

thanks guys :)  it was a pretty colour. made me feel like a really stupid girl, but there u go.
Copper does give a green colour. but the intensity is probably due to the flux they used (based on an acid) this dissolves the copper and makes it easier to heat up sufficiently for the green emission.
