I believe that the imput voltage on an electric fence-the type that controls cattle etc-is usually 6 but does anyone know the output voltage when an animal touches the wire?

Depends on the size of the animal, how wet it is, how wet the ground is, I suppose.

Standard stock fences here in the western U.S. operate on electric pulses of about .03 miiliseconds, during which up to 11,000 volts @ up to 12 joules is produced on an open circuit... deters most animals, from dogs to large bulls...

As a youngster I tried touching one with a blade of grass.  Worked for me!

Not a very useful answer, however when I touched an electric fence (not realising what it was of course) with both hands, it was enough to make my knees buckle after about 3 seconds.

Very strange feeling.  :-)
