//Our planet is facing destruction on a grand scale,…//
It’s not “ours” at all. We just happen to inhabit it for a brief moment of its history. To give you some idea of how brief, if you compressed the history of the Earth to a single year, man appeared on the scene at about 11:30pm on New Year’s Eve. The Earth was here long, long before we arrived and will be here long, long after we’ve departed. When you talk of “destruction” you really mean it becoming uninhabitable by humans.
//I don't have the patience to counter such intellectual poverty.//
Remember what Mark Twain told us, Tora:
“Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.”

If we to always think like that, there would never be any exploration anywhere. If we take that mindset to its logical conclusion. Everybody and all taxes would only be spent on the necceties in life, all other spending on fun or enjoyment or indeed adventure and exploration would be considered a waste of money. What a boring soulless existence it would be.
// What a waste of 20 billion when there is so many starving on earth //
The science of aeroponics, where plants are grown in air without soil, began as a NASA initiative. Aeroponics uses 90% less water than hydroponics, which itself increases yield and uses less water than conventional farming.
