Function of an appendix?

Hi there was just wondering what the function of the appendix is or was? In addition if this has no present use to due to our bodies evoving and making this organ redundant is there anything else that we have, but has become obsolete? Nipples for men is not an answer.

The little flaps at the front of your ears - originally muscle-controlled to close off your ear-holes when you went underwater. And the remnants of a third eyelid in the inner corners of your eyes.
I think the appendix was used to aid the digestion of grasses back in the day.
