Other beings in space
Will we ever find intelligent life in space?
There is one consideration that makes this very unlikely and that is the time period, we have been able to investigate space for a few hundred years.
No body knows how long it will be before we are wiped out.
We will be around for a minuscule period of time compared with
the eons that the universe has been in existence, time wise it's just a drop in a very big ocean.

The existance of other life is statistically certain, due to the distances involved it also pretty close to certain that we will never have any contact wih it.

Once you're familiar with the way how intelligent life evolved on Earth, you'll realise it is virtually impossible for this to happen again.
It is possible that some form of 'life' exists in a form unknown to us somewhere but not in an intelligent form such as here.

Our sun is already past its halfway mark of existence and is predicted by some to engulf the Earth in 4+ billion years.

Dear Wildwood i am so pleased that someone else agrees with me on this subject.
The general feeling is that having billions to the power of billions of stars in the universe there must be other life out there.
What the vast majority of people don't take into account is the immeasurable odds of life starting on this planet or in any other celestial place.
Bear in in mind the odds of eyes, ears, and all the other senses evolving, and evolving from "nothing", and surely it can be seen that the odds are astoundingly against any intelligent life existing elsewhere in the universe.

From what I understand I don't think intelligent life that is similar to us could happen again.

However, on the ocean bed they have found ecosystems that have sprung up without sunlight and it had always been assumed that without sunlight then life couldn't happen (I think). That being the case I don't see any reason why there might not be other ecosystems like that existing. (Although I'm not sure that opinion is based on any kind of scientific fact). So I guess it depends on what you mean by intelligent life.

There is also something to be said in finding intelligent life on this planet at times.... But I've been accused of grumpiness on occasion...

why is it unlikely for life to evolve into intelligent life? Life is competitive, intelligence beats non-intelligence...........so.............

I think it's out there, so many stars, so much time.

Maybe it's quite commonplace. We haven't really been looking that long.

And if they're looking for us, they have to get us at just the right time.....

Some guy I was reading (Harrison) was explaining that if other intelligence finds us, they will fear us, since we are hostile (bombs, WW1, II, etc), and once we go interplanetary/interstellar we will threaten them. So they are ready to wipe us out......

Meridith, There was a time (before radio and Columbus) when the life forms that existed across the pond were not quite so 'primitive' as many of the lifeforms there now appear to be.

Given our less than exemplary history, if we should be visited by another form of intelligent life in the near future, we can only hope that humanity is among the stupidest forms of intelligent life that exists in the universe.

GIven that any lifeform who manages to contact us must be more intelligent than us, we can only hope they view us as pets rather than food.

there are an estimated 114 billion stars just in our galaxy alone and maybe as many as another trillion galaxys in the rest of the known universe.

All it would take for life to be out there is for one planet with an atmostphere to be roughly the same distance to a star as Earth is to our Sun. you do the math.

however seeing as the human species might not be around long enough to find out we'll probably never know for sure

1% of space has stuff in it.
1% of that is a planet.
1% of that has a atmosphere with gas in it that thick enough for life.
1% of that has liquid on it.
that means thers about 0.0000000001% chance of life in anywhere in space i think soz if those figures are wrong but i think thats what my science teacher said.
