While not engaging in controversy, actually, "c" stands solely for the speed of light and is derived from from "Celeritas", which is the Latin word for speed. Apparently Einstein initially used the upper case "V" to denote the speed of light (which, by the way is c = 3 × 10^8 m/s), but early on switched to "c"...
