If you bring a pin near a magnet, the magnet will pull the pin towards it.  The pin is said to be within that magnet's magnetic field.  A similar effect is found near a wire carrying direct current.  More details and pictures of how you can use iron filings to display the field are on http://solar.physics.montana.edu/YPOP/Spotlight/Magnetic /what.html and http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/magnetic/magf ie.html
