I have a friend with a birthday coming up and she loves butterflies. Another friend told me there's a shop in or around Edinburgh, where the owner keeps butterflies and when a butterfly has passed on, they use the wings in jewellery.

I can't find a website for this shop, I've no idea what it's called or anything, just that it's Edinburgh based? I've found an American based site that does the same thing, but the lead time is too long.

Have any of you heard of this place? Somewhere else that does the same thing?

Thanks

Hi Lakitu, I had a look on Google and found this...if you click on the stockists page there are 3 in Edinburgh and 1 in Glasgow.

Not sure if it's the same one you are referring to though!

Thank you very much. I don't think it is the same company but it's the same thing, and I'm happy with that. I'm not sure, upon looking at the jewellery, that it's my friend's style though.

Ah well, back to the drawing board.

Thank you for getting the link for me, I appreciate it :o) x
If it matters to you, I am not sure that butterfly jewellery using real wings comes from butterflies who have had long and happy lives and peaceful natural ends as the wings tend to become shabby and ragged with age

Really? I wasn't aware of that, woofgang. It doesn't really matter now anyway since I don't think the jewellery is fitting to what my friend normally wears....so if you can think of anything else butterfly related, I would be most grateful. :o) x
I don't think that even the common kinds should be killed for jewellery.......

I don't think they should be killed either. I was led to believe they went about their life as normal. That first link, the girl says the Edinburgh Butterfly farm donates to her.

Am I being accused of being a butterfly killer here or are these general musings....?
I'd say evil butterfly killer :-p x

You would, Fickens! :p x

I say again that butterflies who die of old age tend to have tatty faded wings, whoever donates them that is not to say that have had a long (well long for a butterfly) life and a natural death. Butterfly houses are businesses who need to have constnt new hatxhings to show off...do the math yourself.....

It seems to me you're accusing Edinburgh butterly farm of something without anything to back yourself up.

I'm not disagreeing that it would be awful if they were killed for the sake of jewellery like the elephants are for their tusks, but I'm not going to "do the math" based on that. EBW are all for conservation and lobby quite hard for it.

It's by the by, I'm not buying the jewellery.
okay fair enough, keep in mind though that conservation is about species not about individuals....Fox hunters defend what they do in the name of conservation.
I can't imagine any butterfly lover being happy wearing a bit of dead butterfly, to be honest.
Lakitu why not just go for some butterfly jewelry without the real butterfly?
ebay has some lovely butterfly jewellery
Oh laki, what have you started? :p.

There are a few places doing costume jewellery with butterflies at the moment (next, miss selfridge etc ) maybe a butterfly charm/ pendant if you're looking for something a bit more expensive.

Or, you could go the fun way and buy a butterfly farm, we use them in school ( she can source her own wings, then ;) ) x
