Often see strange sounding TV manufacturers in S/marts. Are these major companies under different names.

No not generally.. (though some might contain big brands parts such as the screens)

For example, techika TVs (tescos "own brand") are made by UMC in Slovakia

...and those once good brands Alba and Bush are simply Argos own-brands now - made cheaply to sell cheaply. Performance of such stuff isn't on a par with big brands and Which? has been critical of the quality of TVs and recorders made for Tesco, Argos and even M&S, recently.

Bought a bush tv from argos a few weeks ago,cheap and nasty,took it back and payed a bit more for a toshiba which is excellent.
