Has anyone any suggestions as to how to frustrate these on e-bay?

However,you must have seen occasions where one bidder has bid multiple times in quick succession to find out the previous bidder's maximum limit. If that bidder thought nobody else was interested he may bid less, avoiding the bidding war.

I used to snipe manually and find it an excellent way of avoiding a bidding war as cannot be tempted to bid more than I really want to. The person who is prepared to pay most wins, that is what an auction is about. I recently used Goofbay after a recommendation on AB and won an item in my absence for less than half of what I was prepared to pay. Bidding too early plays into the hands of ebay who want a bid up price to improve their profit. Using goofbay you stand a good chance of getting those 3AM items that you can't stay up for.
I often use goofbay. I put in the maximum bid I want to go to. This is useful in case I will be in bed or out at the time the auction ends. Of course nobody has any idea of whatever maximum bids are lurking in the system, and I have sometimes not got the item that I have put a snipe on with goofbay. It does have advantages in that in the last few seconds it is too late for someone else to up their bid, but if they have entered a higher bid already then this will thwart your snipe and they will get it.
