I am looking for a coffee table, I wanted one that was a little bit different, I was looking at the marble ones but found out that they had to be treated like wood and use mats. I just wanted one that I could just use without botherig with mats. Has anyone any suggestions. Thanks.
Have you tried your nearest BHF Furniture & Electrical Store? They often to have distinctive coffee tables at bargain prices. Use the store finder here:

(Set the 'Service' field to 'Furniture & Electrical Store')
Slate. I have a coffee-table of welsh slate - a lovely greyish-greeny colour, with stainless steel curved bars each end for legs. Immensely heavy. And mine has very sharp corners, so I keep it where it does not stick out.
Probably no help to you but my daughter found an Ercol coffee table (light coloured wood) in a charity shop for next to nothing. These are normally around £200 to buy.
