Microwaves

I need to buy a new microwave - the light has gone - no one will/can repair it. It wouldn't normally bother me but my OH makes porridge and it sometimes overflows because he can't see inside. I just want a fairly basic Solo microwave but the choice is vast and what I notice in some of the Reviews is that with some models you can't see what's going on during the cooking. Can anyone recommend a microwave with a light please? I would have thought this was standard but apparently not! Thank you.

What price range are you looking at, they vary massively, also it depends if you want a grill function, power requirements etc.

Hi Rosie - have had maybe 3 or 4 microwaves. Two of them combi - DO NOT BUY - you don't use all of it.

I love the one I have at the minute Russell Hobbs - I tried it there for you and yes there is a light but because of the "mirror effect" on front of the door you don't see perfectly in.

Tell hubby - if he is unsure about porridge bubbling over then use a deeper dish. Around £50

Thanks - I don't want any special functions - just something reliable around £75 to £120. Mainly use it for baked potatoes, reheating , defrosting.

My microwave porridge has never overflowed...because I use a very big bowl to cook it in.

I was going to say the same. Use a big bowl and stand a plate on the top of it....also he may be using a power setting that is too high.

Talking of Microwaves. Anyone made rice pudding in a microwave?

yes many years ago. It was a whole heap of faff and wasn’t as good (according to late DH, I loathe the stuff) as made in the oven.

Rosie 29, is it just a bulb failure? If you unplug the microwave, you may be able to get the bulb out and buy a new one? bulb details are usually printed on the bulb.

and say I want your cheapest microwave

Jay Jay is right - 90% of microwaving is just turn on 1min and then use. Actually I think it is 99%

I've made the mistake of buying expensive models in the past and never used any of the extras - I now buy cheap and cheerful.

I always buy the manual ones as OH struggles with digital ones..He can just about manage to turn a dial ;o)

Ever since mine packed in with a very loud bang I have steered well clear of microwaves.

I've had a couple go 'bang' mind you anything can do that - had a vacuum,2 TVs and a hair-dryer do the same.
