At baptisms, I have noticed that there is a wider variety of dress among the godparents and sponsors. I think this has to do with the fact that these people come from all walks of life and may not necessarily belong to our church. I have never heard anyone comment on the dress of the godparents and visitors, so my feeling is that you could probably wear whatever you wish, and as appropriate for the church and your friends.
I would add this comment: I always wear a suit to the cathedral services, and Wife dresses very nicely as well. That's what most parishioners do. My dear friends, however, are quite poor and live in a small village with a small church. Few people wear suits. So when we were asked to be godparents a few years ago, it would have been entirely inappropriate for me to have worn a dark suit. Instead, I wore slacks and a jacket in medium colors (probably brown, I really don't recall), and Wife wore a nice outfit, but certainly not haute coutier.
So while you can probably wear whatever you wish, do consider all circumstances.
