I've been told that they are two brothers who disagreed and set up their own individual chain of supermarkets. Is this true? Are they two individuals who are related or are they just trade names for the supermarkets?

It's a common misconception, but Lidl and Aldi are actually unrelated. For the Lidl story, look here. The two brothers you mention were responsible for setting up the Aldi chain. See here.
Funny, how they spring up all over the world...
Is there employment policy in the UK as bad as here in Germany?
They treat there employees pretty bad and should therefore be boycotted, even though they sell cheap!!!
was it not two brothers who fell out and set up rivals nike and adidas (or some other sports makers)

dear A. Holian,

Sorry but I don't know about the sports connection. Thanks anyway.
it was the brothers connection not supermarket that sprang to mind.
Check our Wiki it has the full stories, I believe the two sports company brothers were Puma and Addidas who fell out.
