Has anyone seen a traditional baby's rattle - round top
and handle - made in plastic? I have searched high and low on the internet and also usual stores. Can't believe that they don't exist any more. Preferably London area.

Try Chemist shops they used to sell them.
Of course, they may not exist anymore as they may be considered unsuitable for children under 36months.
