This word seems to be the name for a type of construction of Roman Road that ran through that area on its way from Manchester to York. The road was laid on a bed of tree trunks to prevent it sinking into the marshy ground.
Ashton became known as Ashton under Lyme. One document of 1422 refers to it as Ashton sub Lima. The name seems to have become changed to Ashton under Lyne by the time of the Victorian era.
