Can anyone help me please Im an trying to find out where abouts my surname originates from but so far fallen on deaf ears.

My surname is BIRKHEAD all we know is that it either comes from the CHESHIRE area of the UK or apparently it is a very common AMERICAN surname.

Please help

The word 'birk' itself is a northern - not just Cheshire - dialect version of the 'birch' tree. As many surnames are based on geographical features, it may well be that the original holders of the name lived at the 'head'...ie the top end...of a birch-wood. 
As in Birkenhead which is in Cheshire (The Wirral). I don't recognise Merseyside. Liverpool is in Lancashire.
There's a Birkheads Lane in County Durham if that helps...
