For Government administrative purposes, there are 9 English regions - North East; North West; Yorkshire & Humber; West Midlands; East Midlands; East of England; South West; South East; and London. A website providing information on these regions, including the counties they cover, is at
http://www.cabinet-office.gov.uk/regions/go_se.htm
.
That said, the English regions have never been too well defined; and people outside Government may have their own ideas about the number of regions and where their boundaries lie.
