i heard today that the bottom button of a butler's waistcoast needs to be undone.  anyone know why this is?  also, i probably put this in the wrong section, any suggestions for the right one?

It's said that Edward VII's weight problem meant he stopped doing up the bottom button and in so doing set a trend which has outlived him

These are the rules for all gentlemen's single breasted jackets. One button jacket then use it. Two button jacket then do up the top button only. Three button jackets then the middle or top two buttons to be used. Never do up the bottom button on two or three button jackets. Smart gentlemen do not wear jackets with more than 3 buttons. As mentioned always leave the bottom button of waistcoats undone. We must maintain standards.
