What religion does this mother and daughter belong to?

There is a woman and her young daughter I see out shopping sometimes and they wear small cotton scarves on their heads that I assume is tied at the nape of the neck and goes to a point at the back. It does not cover all the hair. I am curious as to why they wear these scarves and is there a particular religion/belief that they have. Can anybody shed any light on this? I have been a lifelong atheist, so am not very knowledgable about other faiths.
