Every town or city has two urban myths attached to it:
1) That the grandest building in the town/ city was spared by The Luftwaffe from bombing because Hitler wanted it for his headquarters come the invasion and
2) That the big estate on the edge of their town/ city is the largest in the UK/ Europe.
For my money its Wythenshawe just to the south of Manchester.
I was brought up in Becontree, (Beacontree), Dagenham, now Barking, and also Greater London, then, it was the largest council housing estate in the world, built for the overflow from the east end of London after the war, and even though now its mostly privately owned, its still, as Dot says, the largest housing estate in the world. and here endeth the partial Becontree history lesson.
