Why are weekends only 2 days long?

Who decided that weekends would be only two days long? With the amount of time most people waste at work - for example, on here - couldn't we get just as much work done in a four day week, with 3 days rest? If we had an extra day, which one would you choose? Personally, I'd go for Wednesday.

Im all for that. I reckon if you had an extra days rest, you would be able to work harder when you were at work. Sat, sun, mon would be good for the new weekend. Or we invent Midweek, just like the weekend except its just one day, wednesday. Excellent.
That would be a great idea. I've always thought I'd like Fridays off, but then I don't mind working Fridays as it's the last day before weekend and everybody is on wind down, so I would go for Monday or Wednesday.
yeah, right, we'd all just spend the same percentage of 4 days wasting time at work, and thus 20% less work would be done in the world, economies and society as we know it would collapse and everyone would die a painful death. now get back to work.
Well originally weekends were only one day long - Sunday (6 days shalt thou labour, etc). So I don't know what you are moaning about.
i love that idea, i'd go for monday. i hate working on mondays.

yeah i agree too, French school children have wednesdays off- i know that cause i do french at school btw. its hard to get all your schoolwork done in only 2 days

some of the older peops may be able to shed more lite on this, but was there not talk late 70s early 80s maybe of going to 4 day week, maybe to fight unemployment, as wud have to employ more peops to fill the gaps in days worked. Or did I just dream this when I was younger?
