dont you just hate it when people on AB blurt out their nasty opinion. I say if you haven't got anything nice to say then don't say anything at all! you see i was in a rush with my homework and i asked what the theory of the four humours was - i get 2 great replies which saved me a lot of trouble and then i get some stuck up man named joko saying " we do not do your homework research it for yourself! " don't people like that make you SICK!

Gosh, you all never cease to amaze me.

I have no problem with people asking genuine questions whether it be helping them do their homework or even if they are just curious. In any event, why should it matter to any of you? I think you should all get off your high and mighty horses, stop lecturing and just help people who are looking for help. If you don't want to help someone with their question, then just don't answer it.
Lots of issues here, first off Gail it's really off to " name and shame" people in your posts and has weakened this agument considerably because you have, but it is a question and answer site and I have no problems with answering homework questions as they are as valid as any other question.I don't also think you should necessarily call Gail a liar as she may well have had a baby at 14, and that is none of our business, and the fact that she makes the odd typo or spelling error is niether here nor there, and certainly wouldn't stop her studying at degree level. What I'm more worried about is that we are all so bloody horrible to each other often on here now. The flavour is really very antagonistic lately and it's turniong something pleasant and informative into a warzone? anyone know why? I've never had a problem with you by the way joko, always found you very nice and helpful.
peace and love joko ,make friends with gail_snail and the world will be a better place. happy smiley friendly helpful people are we .
The point is that you are not helping them, when I was last a college whenever I did course work I had to name all of my references in full and if they were not detailed enough I got a lower mark.

When you go into the work place they don't want people who can regurgitated facts but people who are resourceful. By answering questions which are obviously homework questions you are doing them no favours and often homework will be more about research than the actual facts gained.

The one thing I do dislike is where people simply type the question verbatim. If it's home work fine but at least put the effort in to format it in such a way that it is clear. (I'm not accusing Gale_Snail of this). For Example....

Can somebody tell me where I can get more information on the 4 humours, its for my homework assignment and I'm finding it difficult.

rather than

Name the 4 humours and their origin.
What are the 4 humours ? just curious.
Oh, so now it's not what they ask but the way they ask it? Goodness me.

So what if they type their Q verbatim and get a bad result in their homework/degree because they have paraphrased their answer from Answervbank or any other internet resource? Does this really keep you awake at night WoWo...?

"Name the 4 humours and their origin", asks ABers to provide an answer to a question. We provide the information and it is up to the Qer (or student) to get the marks they want.

Doing people's home/course work is not only removing the need for them to research, read about, think about and develop their own answers, but it undermines their independence and initiative now and in the future.

There is a difference between helping with research and just answering the question; it's sometimes subtle and it's a thin line to tread. Researching means 'looking for' IE Googling, looking at the various results etc. Not just getting someone else to answer the question.

Do ABers who think doing homework is OK think it is equally OK for students to use the internet to get someone else to write their essays? (BBC News, today) Why not, what's the difference? Just one of scale?

If you think it's not a problem, how do you think the student's tutor would react to learn that the question/whatever had in fact been answered by an ABer? And the student's 'research' consisted of posting the question?

Dolly, seeing as you used punctuation and spelt everything correctly....

The science of Humourism, dictated that the four humours were special fluids associated with the four basic elements of nature, that were thought to permeate the body and influence its health. An imbalance in the distribution of these fluids was thought to affect each individual's personality. What the humours actually are depends upon whose theory you believe or follow. More here:

hang on, is this for homework, are you writing an essay/thesis/dissertation/book...?

oh-ok

For heavens sakes Catso, is it really any different asking people on ab than it was when I was a kid and I asked my Grandad for help with homework? Research means finding out, looking for, and that's what people are doing, they are finding out by asking people who might know. I couldn't give a toss how and where people get the answers to their homework from, why should I? As far as I'm aware it's a perfectly ok thing to do rules wise on answerbank as well so who appointed you as the police on such matters here and why do you think that it is more important than good manners, because people are often very rude on here to kids asking homework questions? That is something I find more of an issue to be honest, the kids are learning however you look at it and that's the important thing surely.
I reckon Gale_Snail that there is an imbalance of yellow bile amongst some of the ab'ers today. You have received a practical example of the four humours in this question!!

I see the homework police are on the prowl, again!

Why do some people assume that education and learning is only relevant if accompanied by a tiresome trawl through endless reference material?

I find the, 'Did you suffer enough to find the answer?' attitude somewhat unpalatable and reminiscent of religious extremism.

If Gail_Snail learned something about the 'Four Humours' by using AB then I see it as a success for her and Answerbank. If she copied the answers verbatim, then that's an issue between her and her tutors and nothing to do with me.

Well, no, they arent looking for, are they? Theyre just getting someone else to look for. EG the 4 humours question; Google would cast up 100s of pages, had they been looked for. And by getting someone else to dish up the answers, I dont think theyre learning either. I reiterate my earlier point: how would the students tutor react to knowing the answers had been provided by an ABer.

Not caring about the education, and standards of education, of young people is a very selfish and short-sighted attitude.

People are rude, and I never mentioned that, nor do I condone it. But the tone in which a lot of these homework questions are asked is rude, also. what is the theory of the 4 humours. No could anyone, a can you help or a please in sight.

Indeed it is OK by Answerbanks rules, just as it is OK by the rules of the applicable sites where students advertise for people to write their essays for them. Does that make it right?

Firstly I think that tutors, teachers and lecturers shoudl be given more approbation than you see fit.

Secondly, we can debate this to death, and we can all take the moral highground. I would consider that I am an academic and I would use any resource available to get my information and use it to disseminate and rationalise my own theories. This is what creates intelligence and uniqueness - and hence good results. Not where they get the information from. I for one would have loved to have had access to the internet - and even AB in my youth. What I do with the information provided to me is none of your business, and please don't pretend to be concerned about the state of education and the tutors.

The simple fact is, that someone has ventured on to here and asked a question and people have lambasted them for simply asking a Q on a Q&A site.

Grow up for goodness sake.

I don't mind answering homework questions at all - it is when they start asking for it to be written out in full, with references and points explained etc etc, because of sheer lazy-itis, and to 'save them the trouble'.

my point was that we help people, not do it for them.

the net is full of formation and gale claimed she had searched and searched and found nothing - which is obviously nonsense.
she just couldn't be bothered.
and same with the long list of other homework questions she posted.
i'll be she couldn't believe her luck!

i told her the net was full of everything she needed if she looked.

if kids find out there is a website full of people who will do their homework for them we will be inundated with kids who can't believe their luck.
all they have to do is copy out the great, carefully considered answers given and bingo, they need never do homework again!

we are helping no-one by doing their homework for them.

i apologise to gale if she got offended by my comment, my intention was not to upset you, but I stand by what i said.

Small cliched "save them the trouble"

sentences don't "help them, not do it for them"

make for a good "need never do homework again"

argument "helping no-one by doing their work for them"

It is just patronising. Fine joko, you are welcome to stand by what you said, but next time you see a "homework" question, why don't you just ignore it, eh.

octavious - i would suggest you look up the word cliche if you think any of those sentences are cliches!

and incidentally, the 'saving them trouble' was a reference to the poster very own words

thanks for the permission to stand by what i said - i will.

I have an opinion on people expecting others to do their essays etc for them - and i will state it as often as i wish.
you are equally as welcome to ignore that too, you know

in this instance all i actually said was that the net was full of all the information she could want if she looked, and that we don't do homework.
if youwish to do the homework of lazy students thats up to you but i don't and i think we should discourage them from asking.

Thanks Octavius I didn't think it was all so complicated (I am a greatgrandmother so no it's not for homework ,god I wish ,on second thoughts no I don't wish to be that young all over again ) I did have a read but will have another look when I have more time . Actually today we are going to pick up my youngest grandson and take him to school ,he's doing his exams . His final year at school before he decides what to do next . Anyway thanks very much for your answer .
By the way Octavius my spelling and punctuation are due to my long past Teachers (God rest their souls) ,The three R's were the mainstay of my school life and I loved school .Wanted to be a Teacher but circunstances etc. did not allow for that . Never mind I managed ok in life and I can't take possessions with me !
