What's the definition of a true friend?

My best friend and I were clotehs shopping recently when she held up a hideous top and asked "What do you think?" I replied to the effect that it wasn't her best colour, at which point a woman walking past said "That's a true friend" and we all laughed. Had my pal already bought the top and asked the question when she was wearing it I would have told her she looked great, because to me she always does.
