Somewhere nice to live Kent/Sussex

Hi everyone. Well I have two children under five and would like to live somewhere which is not to remote as will need to be near activites for the kids but would like to be as close to a beach as possible. I have moved for Brixton to Herts and I love it here but house prices are a bit out of my league here. Are there still places which have a sense of community?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
