Who is your HERO?

I heard that Sir Peter Ustinov, one of my heros, died today, and i am interested who your heros are. I look up to a number of people, but three have had, and continue to have, an impact on my life; Sir Peter Ustinov, Sir Patrick Moore and Michael Palin. Who are your heros and why?

As someone who from a young a age, has looked on in awe as modern (and some not so modern) continue to fly faster and higher and sometimes in comfort (RIP Concorde) I have to admit that a childhood hero of mine was, and probably to a certain extent USAF General Chuck Yeager, who was the first man to fly a powered aircraft through the sound barrier. He risked his life a number of times, even flying with a broken collarbone (from memory) to push the aircraft faster and faster till he broke through Mach1. From seeing him on a number of TV programmes he appeared also to be a genuinely nice man.

Mine is John Lennon. A man who stood up for his beliefs, even under the severe criticism and ridicule of others, and died a sad and needless death. I cried the day he died, and I've never done that before or since for anyone.

GREEDYFLY: Before you question other peoples' hero choices maybe you should state your hero and why. It could stand you in much better stead for questioning others, or it may not, in which case you shouldn't be so quick to "jump". As it goes Jim is mine too because (IMO only) he was a great lyricist and, when he chose/wasn't totally smashed, was an amazing performer. He, and many others of a like mind, helped to destroy boundaries of entertainment and culture in general which directly impacts on the music/film/art in general of today. Without him/The Doors/everyone from the sixties-seventies "counter-culture" our world would be a very different place. He stood up for what he believed in vehemently (right or wrong) and lived a dream that I could never hope to live. I am an atheist, but Jim is my god(little "g"). How's that for you? Your turn.

Sir Sean Connery - a proud Scotsman and a great actor.

yeah Connery's such a proud scotsman, he can frequently be heard shouting 'Scotland Forever' from his homes in Spain, Barbados, LA, etc. Not to mention the fact that he's pretty much played the same character (i.e. Sean Connery) in every role he's taken on. I can't stand the guy. Right...enough negativity. i don't have 'hero's' as such but here are some people i admire. Muhammed Ali, John Lennon, Stanley Kubrick, Steve Waugh, Jonny Wilkinson, Winston Churchill, William Shakespeare, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin. Thanks for reading.

Douglas Bader ' a man who despite losing both legs in a flying accident went on (with tin legs) to fly Spitfires in the Battle of Britain. A hero of the old school, stiff upper lip type, although a bit of a prickly character by all accounts. But still as Kenneth More (who played him in the movie Reach For the Sky) once said "If I was in a bit of a corner, I'd rather be with Bader, legs or no legs".

Im sorry, but someones put in Jonnie Wilkinson????? OMG! I think to say sportsmen are heroes is a bit naff, unless they politically or categorically made a point when doing so. (plus im sick of seeing that bloody drop-goal). No one likes rugby anyway! Were curling champions and we dont care!!!! I'd have to say mine was Sir Winton Churchill. If it wasn't for his courageous leadership and war cabinet, we would all be living under the 3rd reich. UBER ALAS

For me, it has to be Carl Sagan.I watched "Cosmos" when i was a boy,and it instilled in me a sense of awe and wonder about the universe,and mans' place in it.

Well he did say he admires jonny wilkinson. but i agree that is a bit naff. like when people voted beckham best briton. what good is he? what has he ever done but kicked a football. he is hardly the brain of briton!
