Is it illegal to drive barefoot in the UK?

The Highway Code has this to say:

Before setting off. You should ensure that

you have planned your route and allowed sufficient time clothing and footwear do not prevent you using the controls in the correct manner (Section 73) and In winter check the local weather forecast for warnings of icy or snowy weather. DO NOT drive in these conditions unless your journey is essential. If it is, take great care. Carry a spade, warm clothing, a warm drink and emergency food in case your vehicle breaks down. (Section 202) These are the only references with regards to car driving clothing requirements (obviously more applies to bike riders).

It may not be illegal to drive barefoot but if you suddenly have to brake hard my guess is that you will certainly hurt your foot and possibly won't be able to exert enough pressure on the pedal to prevent an accident.

yes, in order to drive you must be wearing appropriate and steardy footwear

I think that's poo, i drive barefoot a lot in the summer and would easily be able to break harder/quicker like that than in my Jimmy stilettos!!

When those wooden scholl sandals were all the rage I used to drive barefoot. Couldn't use the pedals when wearing the sandals! Couldn't walk up the marble stairs at college when wearing them either but that's another story.
