That is, it actually draws attention to potential naughties in circumstances where no-one would otherwise have paid them a blind bit of attention! For those too young to get the point instantly, these asterisks must be utterly captivating. ("What can that mean? Aw, yes, I've got it. Hey, look at this, Wayne!")
I agree, and I had also commented elsewhere, as Quizmonster says below, that they have the unintended effect of actually drawing people's attn. to something they might have not thought of otherwise; but I think the asterisks in S'thorpe etc. are just a bug in the system which they are trying to sort out. I am 40 (41 in 5 weeks' time).
I would say that a person's age doesn't necessarily mean that they are more or less likely to be offended by swear words. Certainly, there are plenty of children out there who know worse words than I've ever heard! Similarly, there are older folk who probably know every swear word under the sun, but prefer not to hear or use them! I do agree, though, that the recent change to the profanity filter was a bit OTT and counter-productive. It wasn't perfect before the change, either, as it didn't allow the use of certain words like 'tit' as in bird, or 'bitch' as in female dog etc etc. Unless the techies can come up with a profanity filter which takes into account the context in which a word is used, I think we'll just have to put up with things! By the way, I'm a few years older than coggles! (Note to self - must remember PaulB's birthday!!!)
